Deputies raid Valinda cockfighting ring

LA PUENTE - About 40 men ran in all directions when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies broke up a cockfight in the backyard of a West Valinda home, a lieutenant said today.

The raid at a home in the 15800 block of Fairgrove Avenue started about 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Someone reported roosters fighting, sheriff's Lt. Mark Stevens said.

Arriving deputies reported about 40 spectators and cockfight operators running away, but three men were caught and arrested, he said.

Frank Hernandez, 67, of Rancho Cucamonga; Gamiz Concepcion, 64, of Pomona; and Eduardo Chaves, 63, of La Puente, were cited for being at a cockfight and released.

"We grab who we can grab,'' Stevens said. "If you are watching you are still breaking the law.''

No information was made available about the property owner. The organizers of cockfights, however, can be prosecuted for felony animal cruelty, deputies said.

In the backyards of the home, deputies found a cockfighting arena covered by plastic tarps; about 50 roosters, about a dozen of which were dead or dying. All had been groomed for fighting, with their combs and waddles cut off.

All the birds groomed for fighting, which were handed over to county animal control officer, reportedly were euthanized.

Deputies also seized razor-sharp spurs, called gaffs, that are tied to the roosters legs to make them more deadly, Stevens said.
