Lindsay Lohan to plead no contest to stealing necklace

Lindsay Lohan arrives with her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, right, for a preliminary hearing, Friday, April 22, 2011, at LAX Courthouse in Los Angeles. Lohan is in court for a hearing on a felony grand theft charge involving a necklace reported stolen by an upscale jewelry store. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)

Lindsay Lohan has decided to plead no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge for allegedly walking out of a Venice boutique with a $2,500 necklace, it was reported Saturday.

The 24-year-old actress, who has already been given a 120-day sentence for violating her probation stemming from a pair of 2007 drunken driving arrests, will enter the plea as early as next week and could legally disentangle herself by spending about three weeks behind bars, TMZ.com reported.

Sources told TMZ that Lohan and her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, hope that Judge Stephanie Sautner will not add any jail time for the theft charge in exchange for a no-contest plea.

Nonviolent criminals rarely do more than about a tenth of their sentence in Los Angeles County jails. A sheriff's spokesman estimated that Lohan's 120- day sentence would likely be reduced to about three weeks jail time. Also, because the original felony theft charge was reduced to a misdemeanor, the whole case could be handed over to the City Attorney's Office, which typically handles misdemeanors.

Lohan also has 480 hours of community service hanging over her head.

The work is to be divided between the coroner's office in Boyle Heights and the Downtown Women's Center. The jail time and community service is supposed to be completed in a year.

A no-contest plea enables a defendant to clear to a criminal charge without admitting civil liability, offering her some protection should she be sued in connection with the necklace.

Lohan had been living in Venice since early this year, but she is reportedly moving to her native New York.

Kauffman Sponsors 'Express Your Pledge' Challenge to Entrepreneurs For Chance at Ticket to 'Big Omaha'

Competition invites entrepreneurs to express what being a founder means to them

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is inviting entrepreneurs to read its "Entrepreneur's Pledge," and express what it means to them for a chance to win a ticket to Big Omaha, a sold-out event billed as "the nation's most ambitious conference on innovation and entrepreneurship," to be held May 11-13, 2011 in Omaha, Neb.

The Foundation created the "Pledge" for entrepreneurs to not only publicly express their enthusiasm for being a business owner, but also to show their support for entrepreneurship as a cause.

Big Omaha's "Express Your Pledge" competition asks entrepreneurs to review the Pledge and explain in 300 words or less what it means to them and at least two ways they could do a better job fulfilling it.

"Like the Pledge itself, Big Omaha's competition gives founders a chance to voice what it means to contribute to our communities and the economy every day, and to have an opportunity to win a seat at Big Omaha," said Nick Seguin, manager of entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation.

More than 500 innovators and entrepreneurs are expected to attend Big Omaha, which will feature speakers such as Shervin Pishevar, founder and CEO of Social Gaming Network, and Sarah Lacy, senior editor at TechCrunch.

Competition entrants each must complete an online application . Entries are due by April 29, 2011, and the winner will be announced the week of May 2. The winning entrant will be responsible for all travel expenses.

The Entrepreneur's Pledge:

I aman Entrepreneur.

I amfollowing a dream, pursuing an opportunity, taking charge of my own destiny.

I ambringing something of value to society, making a job for myself and for others, and creating wealth that benefits my family, my community, my country, my world.

I amone of a movement of millions of entrepreneurs and innovators who made America great, and who will continue to keep our economy going...and growing.

I amwhat I am because many people have helped me along on this journey.

Therefore:

I willtell my story, sharing my successes and failures, so that others taking the entrepreneurial path can learn.

I willstrive to mentor an aspiring entrepreneur.

I willmake my voice heard by those who make policy decisions that affect me and my business.

I willappreciate and celebrate my accomplishments, and the accomplishments of all my fellow entrepreneurs.

I willgive back to the society that helped me to be successful.

I willBuild a Stronger America.

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie arrives as late as possible to his concerts as he worries he will get too ''trashed'' to perform otherwise.

Bobby Gillespie turns up to concerts at the last minute because he worries about getting too drunk to perform.

The singer's band Primal Scream were previously famed for their wild ways and though they have curbed their partying lifestyle, the singer admits he takes precautions to minimise temptation.

He said: "I get in as late as possible and get out as soon as I leave the stage. It's women and children first, every man for himself.

I don't like the risk of getting too trashed to play. It's nearly happened before. We headlined the first T in the Park festival in Scotland. I had to be carried onstage I was so hammered.

The 'Rocks' hitmaker also admitted his group's excesses led to their worst-ever performance.

He told Q magazine: "The worst show we did was probably a German festival called Aachen in 1994.

"Our guitarist Robert Young refused to get on the plane from Athens so we did the gig without him and it was terrible. It was a low point, but that's drug addiction."

'Vampire Diaries' Stud Paul Wesley Marries Torrey DeVitto

In what was more than a union between two love birds, actors Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto's secret New York City wedding ceremony also bridged the gap between two staples of teeny bopperdom, according to Life & Style. Wesley is a blood-sucking, friendly vampire on 'The Vampire Diaries' while DeVitto was crazed nanny Carrie on 'One Tree Hill' before making the jump to 'Pretty Little Liars.'

The pair, who have been dating for more than three years, co-starred in 2007's 'Killer Movie,' an ominous precursor to an apparently killer relationship. But it seems as though Wesley has felt like a married man much longer than as of late.

The pair caused quite a stir back in 2010 when he referred to DeVitto as his wife -- prompting rumors of a secret wedding last year. But Wesley's slip up did not come to fruition until their recent clandestine nuptials and a canary yellow diamond ring and wedding band on DeVitto's finger made it official.

A feast fit for a future king and queen

The eight-tiered wedding cake made by Fiona Cairns and her team awaits the newlyweds.

But the lucky 650 guests who attended today's post-wedding luncheon at Buckingham Palace had few worries about a lack of food.

Not only did they eat classic English fruit cake decorated with elaborate English flowers by famed cake designer Fiona Cairns, they also were offered up 10,000 canaps from 21 chefs in the palace kitchens.

You figure out how many that is per person.

And it was all washed down with Champagne. Of course.

The reception in the Blue Room at the palace immediately followed the ceremony at Westminster Abbey that included the traditional kiss by the newlyweds on the balcony outside. The crowd roared.

Hosted by the Queen, the reception was filled with members of the British royal family, members of foreign royal families, heads of states and a few celebrities thrown in for the glitter factor. Among them: David and Victoria Beckham and singer Elton John.

Guests were entertained by Claire Jones, the official Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales.

Breaking from tradition, Prince William and his bride decided on a buffet-style lunch rather than a more lavish sit-down meal, which is the tradition. (William's grandmother celebrated her 1947 nuptials with filet de sole Mountbatten and a bombe glace Princess Elizabeth.)

Details about the food at the reception were initially well-guarded, but the offerings included finger foods that could be consumed in just two bites.

On the buffet table: Cornish crab salad on lemon blini; pressed duck terrine with fruit chutney; roulade of goat cheese with caramelized walnuts; Scottish smoked salmon rose on beetroot blini; miniature watercress and asparagus tart; quail eggs with celery salt; Scottish langoustines with lemon mayonnaise; pressed confit of pork belly with crayfish and crackling.

And of course, English comfort food made an appearance: bubble and squeak with confit shoulder of lamb, and miniature Yorkshire pudding with roast filet of beef and horseradish mousse.

All that was followed by "puddings," as sweets are known in Britain: gteau opera, blood orange pt de fruit, raspberry financier and rhubarb crme brle tartlet.

As for the liquids, beer was not offered, as it's regarded as dclass for any event the queen attends. This despite the fact that a couple of beers have already been named after the newlyweds ? "Kiss Me Kate" ale and "Windsor Knot."

The Champagne of choice was non-vintage Pol Roger, which has never been served at a royal wedding. It was Winston Churchill's favorite and remains a popular Champagne in England.

Prince William and his wife have left Buckingham Palace for a short break at Clarence House before returning for the evening reception tonight (29.04.11).

Prince William and his new bride left Buckingham Palace in a vintage Aston Martin after their wedding reception.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thrilled onlookers as they departed the palace for a short break at Clarence House before they will return for their evening reception hosted by William's father Prince Charles later today (29.04.11).

William drove the low key couple the short distance to Charles' residence at Clarence House, in a car decorated with balloons and a license place reading 'Just Wed'.

Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have also left Buckingham Palace for Clarence House.

After the bride and groom shared two kisses on the balcony of Buckingham Palace earlier today -where excited revellers shouted "We want Kate. We want Kate" - they attended a reception thrown by Queen Elizabeth for 650 guests.

However, the day has not gone entirely smoothly as a nervous William appeared to have trouble slipping the wedding ring on to Kate's finger as they exchanged vows in Westminster Abbey earlier today, although the bride -stunning in Alexander McQueen - didn't appear to mind.

Over one million people have lined the streets of London today to help celebrate the nuptials of the royal couple.

Sara Evans' ex-husband fears kids will be harmed on tour

Craig Schelske and country singer Sara Evans, pictured in 2005, split the following year.

Evan Agostini/AP

Craig Schelske and country singer Sara Evans, pictured in 2005, split the following year.

More than four years after Sara Evans filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years, the former couple's ugly custody battle continues to take nasty turns.

Just this week, Evans' ex-husband, Craig Schelske, reportedly filed court papers arguing that he should have joint custody of their children due to the potential "harm" they'll face on the singer's upcoming tour.

Evans and Schelske have three kids together: 11-year-old Avery, 8-year-old Olivia and 6-year-old Jack. The country singer, who remarried in 2008, currently has full custody.

But Schelske wants to "protect the children from the likelihood of substantial harm" when Evans, 40, hits the road in June, according to TMZ.com.

PHOTOS: BITTER CELEBRITY SPLITS LEAD TO BITTER DIVORCES

In March, Evans and new husband, Jay Barker, told People they plan to take their blended family ? Barker has four young kids of his own with his ex-wife ? to live on the singer's tour bus this summer.

Court documents filed Wednesday reportedly claim that Schelske, who had joined Evans on tour during their relationship, "has firsthand knowledge that the children are exposed to inappropriate conduct, spend little time with [Evans], and are placed in a party atmosphere with excessive drinking and drug use."

It is also alleged that Evans has "encouraged and condoned underage drinking."

This isn't the first time Schelske has made some potentially damaging allegations against the singer. Following their split, he accused her of having several affairs with various musicians, including Kenny Chesney and the members of 3 Doors Down. The trysts were later denied.

BIGGEST CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUDS

Evans, however, had also accused her ex of affairs, as well as having a penchant for pornography and committing verbal and emotional abuse.

The country star dropped out of "Dancing with the Stars" in 2006 when she decided to file for divorce.

Last year, Evans obtained a temporary restraining order against Schelske, barring him from using the media to make derogatory statements about her or accusations related to their divorce.

A rep for Evans has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Tribeca Film Festival 2011 Top Honors Go To 'She Monkeys', 'Bombay Beach'

NEW YORK -- The intense Swedish equestrian film "She Monkeys" and the poetic California documentary "Bombay Beach" took top honors Thursday at the 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival.

Lisa Aschan's "She Monkeys" won the best narrative feature award. The film follows the competitiveness between two teenage girls on a young women's equestrian acrobatics team.

The category's jury called it "haunting, resonant but never posed" in which "conventional shots become dangerous."

"Bombay Beach" won best documentary feature. It's a stylized film about stray characters living in the California desert by the Salton Sea. Directed by Alma Har'el, it features music by Bob Dylan and Beirut.

The documentary jury said the choice was unanimous for the film's "beauty, lyricism, empathy and invention."

Ramadhan Bizimana took best actor for his performance in the Rwandan film "Grey Matter." Carice van Houten won best actress for her performance as South African poet Ingrid Jonker in "Black Butterflies."

The awards were announced at a ceremony Thursday night. The festival runs through Sunday.

Jan Brewer Signs Bill Making Colt State Gun

PHOENIX -- Arizona's governor has signed a bill designating the Colt Single-Action Army revolver as the state's first official firearm.

Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill without comment on Thursday. Legislative supporters argued that the designation was appropriate because the revolver was widely used during Arizona's territorial days.

Opponents say it was inappropriate to give the official designation to an out-of-state company's commercial product. Colt is based in Connecticut.

Democratic Rep. Albert Hale also says the gun was an instrument of destruction that was used against Native Americans.

TOM HOFFARTH: There's a new Schieffer in town

Tom Schieffer, appointed by baseball commissioner Bud Selig to oversee the Los Angeles Dodgers, speaks to reporters Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

Even in a suit and tie, Joe Torre couldn't have looked more relaxed.

Sitting up front at a Wednesday afternoon news conference to formally introduce J. Thomas Schieffer as the new MLB-appointed overseer of the Dodgers, Torre almost went unnoticed at the hotel ballroom down the street from Los Angeles International Airport.

When he decided not to return as manager of the Dodgers last August, Torre cited one of his biggest concerns as his inability to communicate as well with today's younger players. Yet when asked what advice he might be willing to give baseball commissioner Bud Selig about how the Dodgers have operated lately under the co-ownership of one Frank McCourt, Torre communicated his position quite clearly.

"That's not my role," the new executive vice president of baseball operations said, and then pointed over at Schieffer, who by then was pinned into a corner by a swarm of TV cameras.

"You gotta go ask him."

Make no mistake: No matter how much McCourt has run up on his charge card, Schieffer is now the one in charge. And Torre knows which side to best align himself with at this juncture.

Schieffer will give you that Midwestern "basebawl" drawl and sound like the district attorney Fred Thompson used to play on "Law & Order." But the fact is MLB has

lawyered up on a major-league way to make sure the Dodgers aren't leveraged in any more business dealings that could compromise the balance of financial stability for the other 29 owners.

If you're apt to pick sides from here to eternity, go with this 63-year-old gray-haired lawyer who has plenty of experience in real-life crisis management but acts as if he's simply standing there with a stop sign to help some kids get across the street safely.

There's a reason he was respectfully addressed all afternoon as "Mr. Ambassador," a title bestowed upon him by friend and former President George W. Bush when he was asked to negotiate issues pertaining to the United States' relationship with both Japan and Australia over an eight-year run.

If Schieffer was in the hot seat as a guest on "Face the Dodger Nation," not even his brother, Bob, could have forced him into making any huge blunders.

This Schieffer is just as polished, just as conditioned to respond in a civil manner, just as succinct in his assessment of a situation. When compared to the highly emotional tone McCourt brought to the table in front of reporters just moments earlier, Schieffer looked as if he'd just watched a hound dog chase his tail in circles before collapsing of exhaustion, then offering him a bone.

Asked about his first order of business, he explained: "I'm not in a rush to judgment on anything. I've been in a lot of situations in my life. I've found one of the things that really helps is to listen."

Expect some lapsed Dodgers season seat holders to have his ear soon.

Asked if he saw any potential conflicts developing between him and McCourt over the job description - McCourt wants to know if he's a "monitor" or "receiver" - Schieffer simply replied: "I look forward to talking to Mr. McCourt and hopefully we can have a nice visit and see what exactly what it is he's concerned about. ... And I'm not exactly sure what a `monitor' is."

McCourt knows: It's what most fans now use to watch Dodgers games, meaning there's money to be made there in TV rights fees.

Asked if Selig would ever give the franchise back to the McCourt, Schieffer said: "I think we're all open-minded. One of the advantages I have coming in from the outside I don't know all the rumors and all the stories. The facts will speak for themselves."

That statement alone should give McCourt reason to seek counsel. How many people are coming with him? "I'm not really into entourages," Schieffer said, "but I'll bring enough people to do the work."

He already knows nothing about how things work in Hollywood. All Schieffer says he wants Dodgers fans to know is "the instability and turmoil is coming to an end and we're going to get to the bottom of whatever the problem is.

"Baseball needs the Dodgers. L.A. needs the Dodgers."

And right about now, Schieffer could use a dose of Torre. In the best interest of baseball, of course.

"Joe Torre is a great baseball guy," Schieffer said. "I hope to pick his brain for any thoughts he's got. He's been an institution in baseball. When you have Joe Torre available to you, you use him. He'll play a role of helping me understand what's going on."

Just what McCourt needs - another ex-employee now working for the other side.

David and Victoria Beckham can't wait for the big day

Victoria Beckham's baby bump was nowhere to be seen as she led her family through LAX airport yesterday.

Victoria, 37, and husband David boarded a flight to London for Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding at Westminster Abbey tomorrow.

The couple, who are expecting a baby girl this summer, have sons Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, 8, and Cruz, 6, with them - but the boys are not invited to the ceremony.

Fashionista Posh wore a loose black top - concealing her growing tummy - teamed with leggings, a leather jacket and high heels for the flight.

David got special permission from football club LA Galaxy to take time out for the big event, which he admits he's very excited about.

'I think a Royal Wedding, it's amazing,' David, 35, says in a video on his Facebook page.

'It really is amazing. Our country needs it. Our country wants it.

'The British public love the Royal Family.'

David became good friends with Wills during England's failed World Cup bid.

Photo: Kate Middleton Makes A Quick Getaway

Kate Middleton was snapped by the paparazzi while attempting to escape them in her getaway car earlier today.

Middleton's days of driving herself around may soon come to an end, but it seems she isn't ready to give up all of her commoner luxuries just yet. The princess-to-be got behind the wheel as she left her parents' home in Bucklebury, West Berkshire with her security agent in the passenger seat and a separate protection vehicle following behind her.

The Royal Wedding is now only 3 days away, and Middleton could not look any more calm, cool and collected. The soon-to-be bride will not see her future husband, Prince William, until she arrives at the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Friday, when the world will watch the couple wed.

Paris Hilton and Boyfriend Attacked at LA Courthouse

Miley Cyrus To Surprise Mentor To ?American Idol?s? Lauren Alaina Tonight

The American Idol top 6 perform live tonight on FOX, and Lauren Alaina is in for one hell of a surprise.

Word has it that Miley Cyrus will make a surprise appearance on American Idol tonight! Look for Lauren Alaina to get the most out of this. Alaina sang Miley?s ?The Climb? a few weeks back. Miley will be mentoring Alaina along with the other contestants for this week?s competition.

PHOTOS: Miley Cyrus Takes To Twitter To Show Of Tattoo

Miley Cyrus will be mentoring along side Interscope Record?s Jimmy Iovine. Iovine caused a bit of a stir a few weeks ago when he told Alaina that she was a much stronger singer than Miley Cyrus was. Should be interesting how the two interact tonight. Although, a source from the show indicates that Jimmy has apologized for Miley and personally asked her to come on the show.

Miley and her mom shared a laugh as they where spotted at Los Angeles International Airport today going through security. Are you excited to see what Miley Cyrus has to bring to the American Idol table? Share your thoughts by tweeting us at @socialitelife or head on over to our Facebook page.

Reese Witherspoon's City of Lights Stroll

Taking some time to enjoy her stay in the City of Lights, Reese Witherspoon was spotted out and about on a stroll through the streets of Paris, France earlier today (April 27).

Reese, who is currently on a promotional tour for her latest film ?Water For Elephants," kept it simple and chic during her day out, sporting a pair of Ray-Bans, a red sweater, black pants, and black flats.

The 35-year-old, who has been on pregnancy rumor watch since her recent wedding to Jim Toth, had more baby claims to squash after In Touch reported that she had purchased a maternity dress while on her honeymoon in Belize.

Although Witherspoon has openly expressed her want for more children, the so-called momma-to-be shopping spree reports are absolutely false, as her rep explained, ?She didn?t purchase anything while visiting Belize.

Neil Rimer, Index Ventures: Diversity is Always a Benefit

?Pemo Theodore, a Startup Coach & Australian origin online entrepreneur, video interviews venture capitalists & women entrepreneurs on the shortfall in funding for women @EZebis: Winning theVenture Game for Women.

Video interview with Neil Rimer. Neilis a co-founder and Partner of Index Ventures. In 1992, Neil started the venture capital activity of Index's predecessor firm, later co-founding Index Ventures and raising the firm's first fund in 1996. Neil's current investment focus is on innovative solutions for energy and environmental problems.

Index portfolio companies with women CEOs or foundees:Astley Clarke, Notonthehighstreet, AlertMe, Foodily, doubleTwist, 7TM, GoTryItOn, Editd (co-founder), Mobissimo, Net-a-Porter, Songkick (co-founder), Seedcamp, GenMab. In 2009, Index were honored by Astia with a Diversified Portfolio Award - the firm with the greatest percentage of investments in woman CEOs or founders. You can find Neil on Twitter @narimer

Pemo: What is your sweet spot, in what kinds of businesses do you like to invest?

Neil: We are really early stage investors. I think we've been most excited about getting involved with the entrepreneurs at the earliest stage possible. Really help them form the idea & help them recruit the nucleus that will create the management team. So we really invest as early as we feel comfortable.

Pemo: Fantastic & is there any particular theme that you guys are interested in than others?

Neil: I think we're really interested in opportunities to disrupt big segments of the economy leveraging technology & innovative business models.

It doesn't have to be entirely newly invented technology. It could be adopting or applying technology that's been around for a little while but coming up with a novel approach or novel business model that allows you to put a combination together that is disruptive.

Pemo: So there's no particular industry that you guys focus on? It's just that piece, the early stage & the disruption that you like?

Neil: No I think that's really a philosophy & we look at any industry providing that it's large & that there's a plan that could result in building a big company that would be valued highly.

Pemo: And make lots of money?

Neil: I never thought I'd say this out loud but I actually even find the insurance industry interesting these days.

Pemo: Oh fantastic, ok, so there's lots of possibilities out there.

Neil: If that's possible then anything's possible.

Pemo: Really

Pemo: What percentage of women startups do you get pitches for? And what percentage have you funded?

Neil: We don't really keep those statistic, although we probably should. We have funded a fair number of businesses that have been started by women or women teams over the years. I don't know if that's because we do a fair amount of investing in Europe. But we've probably funded a dozen or so, possibly more businesses that have been started by women. In terms of whether or not that's a higher hit rate based on ones that are pitched by men or pitched by women. I'd have to assume that it's a higher hit rate because we don't see that many businesses pitched by women. Because we've done that many, probably means on balance it is a higher hit rate.

Pemo: Have you noted differences with women entrepreneurs in how they pitch & build businesses? (We're getting into that area of generalization & I know it's a bit touchy?)

Neil: I frankly think that the variability among women is as great as the variability between men & women. I don't think I've seen any particular bias one way or another.

Pemo: That's brilliant!

Pemo: I have been told that venture capitalists fund people similar to them, white, male etc. What is your take on this & if this is happening how can women startups find an opening in this culture?

Neil: I think the venture capital industry is fairly large at this point. There's a lot of different people you could be talking about or talking to. But I don't think the good investors try to fund people who are like them. In fact if what you say is true, then I don't know who's funding all of the guys from South East Asia who are going to Silicon Valley & starting businesses. They certainly don't fit the mold that you talked about. I think strong investors will look at somebody's background, their track record, their vision & their ability to lead a team & carry out the vision & really don't pay much attention to whether they come from the same background.

In fact I think diversity is always a benefit so that's going to bring additional strengths to the company.

It will help them draw on a broader pool to build their team. It will give them access to a broader network to sell their product into & ultimately to exit their business. I don't see how restricting the scope of people you fund can help in any way.

Pemo: Aileen Lee, Kleiner Perkins, recently wrote a post on Techcrunch about the market of women & how huge that market is. I would imagine as you said with diversity, having women on the team is definitely going to mean you're going to have an insight into that market.

Neil: Well you know sometimes people forget that half of the customer base out there is women. In fact it's more than half, because many products the purchasing decisions are essentially made by women. So you may want to understand that. You may want to have some people on your team who understand that segment market.

Pemo: Thank you, thank you that's great encouragement

Pemo: Do you think that networking with Venture Capitalists is harder for women entrepreneurs in Europe?

Neil: I don't think so.

Pemo: What do you see as the obstacles for inclusion of women entrepreneurs in achieving funding in Europe?

Neil: I think the biggest problem & probably the only problem is that there aren't enough women in technical & engineering & scientific tracks.

I think that given that we invest in lots of technology companies, many of the founders & members of the founding team come from that background. If it's predominantly a male source then by the sheer numbers we're going to see more male entrepreneurs. So we end up funding more of them. Really it's a supply problem. I don't see any obstacle to women getting in front of us with their great idea.

Pemo: Great so really a lot of people do say that it starts really young as in children & encouraging girls to study technical subjects.

Neil: That's right!

Pemo: Do you think that women need to have their business developed before they can achieve funding?

Neil: Yeah but I don't know why that would apply more to women than men. There are some businesses & in some cases some entrepreneurs where you would only be comfortable if they have significant prior experience. There are some instances where you're willing to back a couple of kids out of university or out of a graduate program with no prior experience but a lot of vision & a lot of promise & belief that they're scalable. And I don't that see that's any different for men or women.

Pemo: It's really obvious that you've got no bias Neil, because even the question was a curly one for you. Thank you

Pemo; Often advice for sourcing venture is equated with dating, implying that there is a matching that needs to happen with entrepreneur & investor. Have you noticed a general psychological profile of venture capitalists and also of entrepreneurs that promotes the attraction & synergy between them to develop a great startup?

Neil: Yes so I think that confidence is the fundamental currency of these decisions & it really cuts both ways. I think the entrepreneur has to have a lot of confidence in the investor that they're letting into their company & that they're ultimately forming a very important partnership with. And the investor has to feel that way about the entrepreneur. That's again like dating or like a marriage.

You have to be able to look at each other & feel like no matter what comes, you're going to be able to face it.

You may have arguments & you may have disagreements but one of you will end up convincing the other, or you both will be in agreement to begin with, what the right thing to do is. You'll face whatever challenges & this is somebody that you'd like to go into battle with. I think again that applies for any entrepreneur. I don't think it's any different for men or for women. But I do think that that is probably the single thing for any entrepreneur to convince an experienced investor. Lots of people can come in with interesting ideas, big markets, nice demos but the real question is, given that I know that things will not go as planned (& that's really a given), is this someone that you're willing to get into that kind of trouble with. Are you confident that you will be able to get through those challenges & prevail in a very productive way. Actually are you going to enjoy doing that because life is short & you prefer to do this with teams that you're going to enjoy spending lots & lots of time with. That's a key fundamental question. I think chemistry has a lot to do with that. The approach that somebody takes in a conversation, how straightforward they are & whether or not they are the type that shares risk & talks about risk & says 'Hey this is the biggest challenge that I'm facing, I have a couple of ideas about how I might deal with it but what are your ideas?' Rather than a different approach would be to dress everything up & conceal risk & hope that the investor only figures out that that risk exists when it's too late & they're down the path.

Pemo: Authenticity & building trust is what I'm hearing are very important & that there's a human connection between the investor & the entrepreneur.

Neil: Yep

Pemo: Very good thank you.

Pemo: In the dance with an entrepreneur both in the decision making process of funding a startup & then in working with those startups what are the necessary qualities that make a good venture capitalist. Some of the talents mentioned: Would you trust your gut instincts & feelings that happen within the relationship with the entrepreneur as signs about what's happening in the business, in the startup? Or would you ?manage by influence or persuasion?

Neil: Again I think you want to have the kind of dialogue & relationship that you would have in a personal relationship. This may be very different than what you hear from some other folks. There's kind of no room for formality or politics or protocol I think in a discussion between partners. We don't see ourselves as anything other than just another partner in a business. This is the kind of the stuff that gets in the way at the larger companies & the incumbents that our companies are trying to run circles around. So if we get caught up in the same kind of stuff, we're not going to do very well. We really need to have just a really direct, open discussion. There should be nothing that you can't say to each other. You can criticize the business as much as you need to to make a point, if that's genuine & it shouldn't be seen as an attack on somebody's value as a person & it shouldn't affect the relationship. In the same way that 2 brothers or 2 sisters can really say anything to each other if there's that kind of underlying trust & respect & love that protects them & allows them to just communicate very effectively. I think you really need to aspire to that same kind of channel between partners in a business, whether they're founders or founder & investor.

Pemo: Yes because you're working so closely together for a long time, correct?

Neil: Absolutely.

Pemo: Thank you so much Neil, it's been really, really valuable to hear your feedback about this issue & I really appreciate that you've taken the time out of your busy schedule.

Neil: My pleasure thanks for giving me the opportunity.
