Raised in Tahiti, Tuki Brando's life was like a Dickens novel set in the tropics.

Marlon Brando's grandson may be getting his chance in front of the camera, but his life has been filled with more tragedy than your average Academy Award-winning film.

Tuki Brando, 20, who has modeled for Versace and is the face of French watchmaker TechnoMarine, overcame a horror-filled past to become a medical student in Bordeaux and a much-photographed face, reports the Telegraph.

Raised in Tahiti, his life was like a Dickens novel set in the tropics.

He never knew his father ? his uncle, Christian Brando [Marlon's son] shot and killed him while his mother was pregnant with him. Depressed and suffering from mental illness, his mother Cheyenne, Marlon's daughter, committed suicide when Tuki was 5.

He lost his grandfather, the great actor-turned recluse at 13, but was omitted from the actor's will.

The young Brando was quickly sought after for his Tahitian good looks and high cheekbones and began modeling at 17.

In a 2007 interview, he said that he had no interest in ever becoming an actor. The comparisons to his grandfather would be too great.

"Acting is my grandfather and modelling is me," he told the Herald Sun. "Even if I wanted to, it would be too hard for me. People would say, ?Ah, he's not as good as his grandfather.' I want to do something different."
