Chaz Bono and mom Cher had to work on their relationship after Chaz decided to become a male.Chastity Bono's transition into Chaz Bono wasn't easy on himself, his relationship with his longtime girlfriend or his famous mother.
But despite Cher's initial reservations about her son's gender reassignment surgery, Bono knows one thing for sure.
"There's no doubt about her love for me," the 42-year-old said on Monday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
Bono explained that while many have assumed his mom would automatically understand that he never felt right in a female's body and wanted to transition into a male, "people forget that she's a parent."
And with Bono's surgery, documented in the film "Becoming Chaz," which will air on Winfrey's OWN network on Tuesday, their mother-daughter relationship changed into a mother-son relationship. Many can attest that those two are often not the same thing.

"The truth is a lot of parents never speak to their transgendered kids again," Chaz pointed out.
But Cher has started to come to terms with Bono's transformation in her own way, agreeing to be interviewed for the documentary and being pleased with the finished product.
"She really liked it a lot," Bono said of his mom's reaction after viewing the film. "But I think it was probably hard to see."

While Cher admitted to Vanity Fair last year that she was still forgetting to "to call her 'him,'" Bono told Winfrey that the music legend "has finally gotten that this is the thing that's making me happy."
For years Bono felt at war with his body, he explained, as if it were "literally betraying" him as he went through puberty and his shape changed from athletic to curvaceous.
"You have this image of yourself and all of a sudden your body does the exact opposite of what you feel," he explained.
To make his physical appearance more in line with his feelings, Bono bound his chest as tightly as possible, changed his wardrobe style and received testosterone injections.
He also had surgery that removed his breasts once and for all, but kept his female genitalia as it was.

"At this point, I really don't have any plans to do bottom surgery," he told Winfrey, possibly because he feels "really good" about the changes he has made so far.
"I feel like a man now, and I'm really happy," he said, noting that "everything is so easy and effortless."
But it wasn't that way for girlfriend Jennifer Elia, whom he began dating in 2005 while still a woman.
Bono explained that "saying the same thing that I would have before with a deeper voice" and as more of a man "didn't mean the same thing to her."
"We had to really almost relearn how to communicate and how to be around each other," Bono told Winfrey with Elia sitting by his side.
